Apart from the Big Five, Kruger is home to 147 different mammal, reptile and bird species. We begin the search for them from the moment we drive into the Park...and with our professional guides, your chances of a memorable sighting are greatly increased. And we’ll all be listening for the sound of that lion at night...

Durban • Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park • Durban
Heading north from Durban, we have the vast Hlulhuwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve in our sights – this is the oldest reserve in South Africa, one world-renowned for its historic conservation of the then nearly extinct white rhino. It’s home to the Big Five, as well as more rare sightings such as wild dog and the elusive cheetah.

Hazyview • Greater Kruger National Park • Hazyview
Buffalo Rock Tented Camp is set in a game rich area of unspoiled natural beauty within the park, which means sightings of the Big Five are more likely. We're assured of our privacy here…other than the nocturnal lion and hyena visitors who are often seen around camp. It’s about the fun, the sunsets, the sundowners and the wild animal sounds.

As far as the wild animals are concerned - you may be lulled into a false sense of security because the animals appear 'tame'. They have become accustomed to the safari vehicles and will generally go-about their daily business seemingly completely unconcerned by your presence. This is not the case however, although they are relaxed they are most definitely aware of your presence and alert to any perceived danger. These animals are most certainly wild - respect their space (particularly if you are on a self drive safari) and under no circumstances feed them. Never walk in areas where there is 'big game' e.g. lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, hippo, hyena etc, unless accompanied by a professional game ranger.
• Luggage • Quite often one needs to travel in light aircrafts to reach remote safari lodges and destinations (e.g. Okavango Delta safari or safari parks in Zambia), we suggest you pack your clothing in soft bags, for ease of cramming said luggage into smaller aircraft holds. Check with your travel agent before you leave, as to how much luggage you can take with you, it can range between 7kgs to 20kgs depending on the aircraft.
• Clothing• Safari dress is casual and comfortable, in light neutral colours (tan, khaki and white) and cotton fabric is a great option. A warm jacket for early morning and late afternoon/evening safari drives is needed as temperatures can drop quite steeply in some areas, and during the winter months - particularly desert safaris in areas like the Namib Desert in Namibia or the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. On safari during the winter months - beanies and scarves are great, but by mid-morning temperatures will be on the rise, with weather ranging from warm to hot, so bearing this in mind, sun protection year round is important in the form of sun cream, hats and sun glasses. Wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes. Another useful item of clothing is a light weight rain coat.
• Bug Protection • Bring insect repellent to help keep mozzies (mosquitoes) at bay - usually mozzies are more active during the early morning and late afternoon. A light long sleeve pullover is also a good idea to cover your arms. During these times, long pants/socks are also recommended to cover the ankles and lower legs.
• Health Precaution • We do recommend however that you contact your local GP prior to travel with regards Malaria prophylactics - nowadays there are also malaria precautions that children can take.
Just so that you know ....
•
Most (not all) safari game lodges provide insect repellent in your rooms, along with mosquito nets over the beds and either a fan or air-conditioner or both.
•
Most safari game vehicles keep blankets for the cold mornings and evenings, and ponchos should it rain.
•
Your safari game ranger usually has a good pair of binoculars on the game vehicle for all to share, but it’s probably a good idea to bring your own.
